Sandbox

Hey, Sandbox applications are live!

How would you like to forgo taking classes next year and instead launch a tech startup with friends?!? Come learn how you can do exactly that while also receiving school credit (~20 credits)!

Come to the info session on Wednesday (10/13) at 6:00pm in 151 TNRB to get all your questions answered from the Sandbox director and current Sandbox students.

We’ll have Costco pizza for all attendees AND we’re even doing a giveaway of AirPods Pro for those who apply!

User Experience Design Courses at BYU

DESIGN

Design BA, emphasis in User Experience Design (UX). https://designdept.byu.edu/design-ba

IT & CYBERSECURITY

  • IT&C 210A/B – Fundamentals of Web-Based Information TechnologyWeb technologies including distributed architecture, networking, database concepts, client and server development, infrastructure management, and web system integration. Learn more here for A. For B.
  • IT&C 255 – Human-Computer InteractionUser experience design techniques and best practices including requirements analysis, usability studies, prototyping methods, evaluation techniques, and cognitive, social, and emotional theories. Learn more here.
  • IT&C 492R – Special Problems in Information Technology & CybersecurityIndividual study in current topics of information technology and/or cybersecurity. Learn more here.
  • IT&C 555 – Advanced Human-Computer InteractionAdvanced techniques for designing, prototyping, building, and evaluating technology-mediated user experiences. Human-computer interaction research methods including experimental design. Ethics of working with human subjects. HCI theories and best practices. Learn more here.

GRAPHIC DESIGN

*these classes require permission or access through your program (ex: the Design BA)

  • DESGD 360 – Interaction Design 1Introduces foundational interaction design principles and tools to prototype user-centered interfaces. Through team-based course work students gain user interface experience and work-flow best practices. Learn more here.
  • DESGD 460 – Interaction Design 2Explores how interaction design integrates both client/user needs to prototype holistic and appropriate experiences. Through team-based course work students gain an understanding of user experience design and workflow. Learn more here.

DIGITAL HUMANITIES AND TECHNOLOGY

  • DIGHT 210 – Humanities Technology: Tools & SkillsIntroduction to the skills required to create teaching and research applications in the Humanities; fundamental principles and skills of programming; principles of interface and human/computer interaction; critical problem solving. Learn more here.
  • DESGD 394 R: Interaction Design Collaborative Projects – In the course, you will work with a team of business strategists to design and launch an app for a social impact organization (non-profit or socially conscious for-profit). In addition to the talents of a cross-functional team, each team will have significant resources to advertise their app funded through grants and investments. As a result, the class will closely approximate the experience of incubating a new product. Each student team will gain experience in collaboration, prototyping, presenting to clients, taking designs from idea to execution, and working with teams across disciplines. Classwork will focus primarily on the group projects, additional lectures and readings will help students become fluent in product design processes and proficient in contemporary tools for a collaborative design like Figma and Slack. Since the class is focused on a group project from the get-go, students would best be prepared by taking at least one introduction to User Experience design class previously (such as DESGD 360 Interaction 1; INDES 341/INDES 494R Sec.1/IT 515R Experience Design: Designing Evidence-Based Empathetic Experiences; INDES 494R 001 Designing and Prototyping Digital Interfaces; INDES 494R 002 Designing Experiences that Surprise and Delight; INDES 341 Technology Interface Studies for Industrial Design 1; IT&C 255 Human-Computer Interaction).

INDUSTRIAL DESIGN

  • INDES 340 – Graphics Studies for Industrial Design 1Introduction to graphic skills such as corporate identity, packaging design, logo design, and web/interface design elements. Learn more here.
  • INDES 341 – Technology Interface Studies for Industrial Design 1Understanding and improving the human experience with technology products. Exploring design-focused research, evaluation, and presentation techniques. Project based with the goal of learning by doing. No coding skills are required; however, basic visualization skills will be a benefit. Participating in user-centered research methods, mapping experiences, persona development, usability testing, prototyping, and developing new product proposals. Learn more here.

COMPUTER SCIENCE

  • CS 356 – Designing the User Experience. Students will use their background in software engineering to create prototypes of increasing functional and visual fidelity. Learn more here.
  • CS 456 – Interactive Software Systems. Introduction to software architectures and techniques for graphical user interfaces. Input devices, windowing systems, event-driven programming, interactive geometry. Learn more here.
